White Vases for Centerpieces

The vase shape matters more than most people realize. A wide mouth lets stems spread and droop. A narrower opening keeps everything gathered and standing, which is why tulips in particular need a vase with some structure at the neck.

Cut an inch off each stem at an angle right before they go in. Cold water, not room temperature. The stems sitting above the vase lip should be about three quarters as tall as the vase itself. Too short and the blooms sink. Too long and the whole thing tips.

For roses, place the first two stems opposite each other so they cross inside the vase and hold each other up. Build the rest of the arrangement around that frame. For tulips and roses together, cut the tulips two inches longer than the roses and let them fall naturally into place around the outside. The tulip leaves act as a support structure and hold the roses in position.
