Most people guess when they pick a coffee table. They see one they like and buy it. Then it comes home and feels wrong. Too big. Too tall. Too far from the couch.
It does not have to be that hard. There are a few simple rules that make it easy. Follow them and your table will look like it was made for the room.
Get the Height Right
Your coffee table should sit at the same level as your sofa seat. Or up to two inches lower.
Most sofas sit about 17 to 19 inches off the floor. So aim for a table that is 15 to 20 inches tall. When you sit down, the table should feel easy to reach. You should not have to bend far to set down a drink.
If your table is too tall, the room feels stiff. If it is too short, it looks lost.
Match the Length to Your Sofa
A good rule: your coffee table should be about two thirds the length of your sofa.
So if your sofa is 90 inches long, look for a table that is around 60 inches long. It does not have to be exact. But you want the table to feel in scale with the sofa, not dwarfed by it.
A table that is too small looks like an add-on. A table that is too long blocks the room.
Leave Room to Move
This one gets skipped a lot.
Leave at least 14 to 18 inches between the front of your sofa and the edge of the table. That is enough space to walk by and stretch your legs. Any less and the room feels tight. Any more and the table feels out of reach.
If you have a small room, aim for 14 inches. If you have more space, 18 inches gives the room room to breathe.
What Shape Works Best
Shape matters more than most people think.
A rectangle works best with a long sofa or a large room. It follows the line of the sofa and feels clean and calm.
A round or oval table is a good pick for small spaces. No sharp corners means more room to move. It is also a smart choice if you have young kids.
A square table pairs well with an L-shaped sofa. It fills the open center without feeling too wide or too narrow.
One More Thing: Width
Your table should not be wider than the depth of your sofa seat.
Most coffee tables run 18 to 24 inches deep. That range works for most sofas. If the table is deeper than your sofa seat, it starts to take over the room. Keep it in scale and the space will feel just right.
