What shape tray to put on coffee table?

The Rule of Conformity for Trays

Rectangle Shaped

Rectangular trays are the most common recommendation for coffee tables. This is because the majority of them are rectangles. This way the shapes both complement each other and there is a balance of negative space all the way around.

It follows the tables natural lines which creates a clean cohesive look. It feels balanced and intentional like the tray belong there. It also has the additional benefit of maximizing the amount of surface area around it if there are other objects that needs to be resting on the surface.

Circle Shaped

The rule of conformity also applies to circular trays that live on similarly circle coffee tables. In this case the same shape again allows the platter to seamlessly blend into the larger surface.

This ties into the larger design idea called repetition. It allows their to be unity and flow between the various objects in your room. This helps make a living room feel a bit softer and more organic.

The Rule of Shapes and Contrast

Circles Platters with Square Surfaces

Using circles and squares creates contrast. Mixing different shapes help create a visual pop by creating a natural tension between the shapes.

One tip is to keep the server quite a bit smaller than the larger table so they shapes don't fight each other too much.

You guessed, the inverse is also true. Use an a shape with hard edges to create a striking visual contrast against an organic outer shape. This way you can create something unique and distinctive in your home.

Two Thirds 2/3 Rule

Another rule of thumb is to keep the inner tray about two-thirds the overall length of the table. This helps to ensure there isn't too much noise within the table and it has some room to breathe. We don't want to overwhelm the space.

A Mix of Heights

Creating different levels within your living room helps create visual intrigue as well. Candles of various heights or stacks of coasters can craft a fascinating form that makes your guests feel inspired. Variety is the spice of life and it's no different when decorating your coffee table trays.

Depth and personality help take your living area to the next level. The skyline effect is when the eye is naturally drawn up and down with the top line of the objects. It's a fascinating way to create interesting vignettes.
